A blank timeline template is a versatile tool that can be used for various purposes in education, project management, personal planning, designing creative projects, and probably more things I can’t think of. This post provides 3 different printable blank timeline templates, depending on your needs.
Timeline template with lines for writing
This template contains 9 boxes, each with 4 lines beneath. There are 5 boxes in the top row and 4 in the bottom row, with a central dividing line and arrows pointing to each box.

This template is ideal for educational purposes. Think history lessons, where students can plot historical events in chronological order to visualise sequential events such as wars and scientific discoveries. This timeline can also be used for book or narrative analyses, where students might track plot points and/or character development. It can also be used for illustrating chronological sequences like evolution, geological timelines, and experimental phases.
Free timeline template with 10 boxes
This blank timeline template contains ten boxes, with 5 either side of a central series of rightward pointing arrows. The arrows are designed in such a way to have space for writing inside.
In addition to educational use, this timeline can be used for business and marketing purposes. Because the boxes are quite large, you can use them to showcase key achievements in a company’s history, product launches, legal case timelines (plenty of space for organising evidence, dates, etc…), and tracking of compliance and other business deadlines. It’s also useful for creative types looking for narrative templates to outline plots, character arcs, film sequences, and whatever that bright mind of yours needs to visual for organizational purposes.
Extended long form blank timeline template
This template contains heaps of space for complex projects with multiple steps. There are 20 different boxes along s-shaped lines, each with an additional box above for extra notes.
Use this timeline template for planning that requires more detail, like workflow visualization on complicated and iterative projects (e.g. in software development). You can also use it for personal planning. For instance perhaps you’re planning a large wedding or other event where mapping out a sequence of events will help to keep everyone on the same page. Finally, you can use this for goal and habit tracking, to monitor long term goals or behaviours like learning a language or saving money.
