This post is dedicated to providing free lined paper printables of varying types, on both A4 and US Letter sized paper, for anyone looking for ruled pages to print.
Ruled paper, also known as lined paper, is writing paper marked with lines to assist with handwriting (if you’re like me you find it impossible to write in a straight line on unlined paper). The lines are thin and light gray (AKA feint ruled paper). I’ve provided lined paper templates with left margins divided by a thin red vertical line as well as full pages of horizontal only lines.
US Letter printable lined paper
North America and a handful of South American countries use 8.5 x 11 inch US Letter paper as their standard. If you live outside of this region (i.e. most of the world), there are A4 sized papers further down this page.
I’ve included narrow ruled, medium ruled (college ruled), and wide (legal) ruled pages to print below. Each is available in two formats: with and without a line along the left to create a margin. Please note both formats are included in the same PDF files, so if you’d like to print only lined pages with margins, then just print page 1 of the PDF.
US Letter wide ruled lined pages to print (legal ruled paper)
This wide ruled lined paper template is ideal for younger students, learners, and anyone who prefers or needs more space for whatever reason. The spacing between each horizontal line is 1/32 inch or 8.77 millimeters, providing ample space for those with larger handwriting. There is a vertical red line 1 1/4 inches from the left of one of the papers for those who prefer a margin.
US Letter medium ruled lined pages to print (college ruled)
Medium lined paper features 9/32 inch (7.1 millimeter) spacing between the lines. One of the pages contains a margin 1 1/4 inches from the lefthand side of the page, as well as empty space along the top.
This type of lined paper is also referred to as college ruled paper because of its distinction from the wider spaced sheets used by youngsters who are still fine-tuning their handwriting skills. The assumption is that as students mature, their ability to write smaller text improves and thus they move onto college ruled paper. But this is kind of silly; all sorts of factors might impact a person’s preferred line height. Use what works best for you, no matter your age and skill.
US Letter narrow ruled sheets for printing
These narrow ruled pages to print have the most narrow spacing between horizontal lines, at just 1/4 inch or 6.4 millimeters and consequently contain the highest number of lines per page. It’s idea for those with smaller handwriting who have a lot of information to note down.
A4 ruled sheets for printing
A4 (210 x 297 millimeters) is the standard paper size for most of the world. I’ve provided ruled pages with 8mm and 15mm spacing, which are common in the UK. Both are available with a side and top margin and without.
A4 single ruled paper with 8mm spacing
If your handwriting is small or you need to fit more onto a single page, this tighter spacing is probably what you want.
A4 double ruled paper with 15mm spacing
The broader spacing on this lined paper template is better suited to children, people with larger handwriting, and individuals who need or want more space for any reason.
